A wave of fuzz-laden guitars, theremin textures and improvisational energy arrives today as Galveston, Texas-based psychedelic garage rock band India Tigers in Texas release their new album Dose across digital platforms via Geodesic Records.
The record marks the group’s second full-length project and showcases what the band describes as a commitment to spontaneity, creative connection and what The Doors’ Jim Morrison famously called the "will to be weird."
Blending psych rock, garage rock and progressive influences, Dose aims to be experienced as a continuous sonic journey rather than a collection of isolated tracks.
Much of the album grew out of the band’s live performances. Several songs had already evolved through extensive touring before entering the studio, while others were created almost entirely through in-studio improvisation. The result, according to the band, is an album with an organic, “alive” character, where tracks flow into one another and share musical energy.
The material reflects the quartet’s wide-ranging inspirations. Lyrical themes span video-game culture, history, travel experiences and references to psychedelic consciousness, as well as stories tied to their island hometown of Galveston.
The group features Mel Mo’ Black (vocals, theremin, keyboards, percussion), Jaron Hall (vocals, guitar), Kevin Barnes (bass, vocals) and Victhor Resendiz (drums). The album was produced by Austin Sepulvado and Steve Christensen.
India Tigers in Texas have built a reputation within the psychedelic underground, sharing stages with genre figures including Frankie and the Witch Fingers, Death Valley Girls, Acid Mothers Temple, Sugar Candy Mountain and Brazilian legends Os Mutantes.
To accompany the release, the band has unveiled the official video for the single “Another Castle,” a playful visual tribute to classic video-game culture.
The album’s eight-track lineup includes Loading…, Another Castle, King of San Francisco, Temujin, Serpentine Tangerine, Jabberwocky, Sun Song and Dark Water. A splatter-vinyl edition featuring gatefold artwork by artist Psensibil is also available.
In a previous interview cited by Houston Press, the band described its collaborative songwriting approach as highly intuitive, with members listening closely to one another and shaping songs collectively.
Stone explains how all four members work together to create their richly textured and layered sound, “It all comes together pretty organically. We are lucky like that.” She continues, “I think we are all pretty good at listening to each other and it feels like we are all writing it together at the same time.” —Gladys Fuentes, HoustonPress
Fans will have a chance to hear the new material live when India Tigers in Texas embark on a summer tour later this year.
