May isn’t just the gateway to summer—it’s National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, and the perfect time to reset your relationship with movement. Whether you're a dedicated athlete, a weekend warrior, or just someone looking to get off the couch, Move in May is your annual reminder that every step counts, every body can move and with the weather improving and the days getting longer there are more opportunities to get out and about.

Why Movement Matters More Than Ever

In our hyper-connected, always-on world, movement often takes a backseat to busyness. But science and common sense agrees: our bodies were made to move. Regular physical activity boosts energy, improves sleep, strengthens Mental Health, and reduces the risk of chronic disease. Even short bursts of activity can spark change. With the Month of May also hosting the Mental Health awareness week, running from Monday 13th May - Sunday 19th May there is no better reason to get yourself moving.

'You don’t need a gym membership to participate in Move in May, you just need intention. Walk your dog. Dance in your kitchen. Take the stairs. Ditch the car. It all adds up.'

Make It Personal

The beauty of Move in May is its flexibility. You don’t need to train for a marathon (unless you want to). You just need to find your version of movement and make it a habit. Here are some ideas to get started:

Walk and talk: Take your phone calls while walking.

Micro-movements: Stretch for 5 minutes every hour.

Weekend warriors: Try a new sport every Saturday—pickleball, anyone?

Desk detox: Replace 30 minutes of screen time with a quick workout or nature walk.

Chair Aerobics: You-tube has some great exercise videos which don't even warrant getting up out of your chair.

Greenspace Gym: Check out the outdoor gym's located in a greenspace near you. For a list of where you can find them, check out www.liveithull.co.uk

Turn May Into Momentum

Want to make it stick? Set a Move Goal for the month. Whether it’s hitting 10,000 steps daily, completing a 30-day yoga challenge, or dancing every night before bed, make it fun, achievable, and trackable.

You can also join virtual or local community challenges—many local communities host free events or you can find virtual challenges on your smart device or fitness tracker. Share your journey on social media using #MoveInMay and inspire others to join in.
